About Breakaway: Located in San Anselmo, California, Breakaway Matcha is founded by Eric Gower, a chef and cookbook author who had previously lived in Japan for 16 years. The company's motto is providing exceptional matcha and education. At the time of this review, Breakaway offered 17 different grades of matcha, which were all sourced from small, domestic farms in Japan. Many of these farms have been producing matcha for over 20 generations. Each blend was crafted in collaboration between Eric and the farmers to achieve a particular depth of flavor. You can take a quiz on their site to be matched with a matcha blend best suited to your liking. Blend prices vary depending on availability of the yield. Breakaway gets its name from the concept of moving away from strict tradition and ritual, to a way that is perhaps more simple and true to ones lifestyle.

About Blend: One of few organic blends offered. From a Kagoshima (Kyushu) coop. I ordered the sample size, which may impact freshness.

Price: $59.00 for 30g

Scent: Found this blend to smell extra creamy, with a hint of spinach.

Hyperpremeuim Blend Review

Color: A bright green, but comparing to other brands, color is a bit muted and flat. 4 points

Foam: Thin, mostly even. 4 points

Taste: No bitterness with low temp water, light, spinach vegetal notes, hint of umami, but mainly mellow and fresh. 3 points

Final Score: 3.7 out of 5

Thoughts: This is really a fine blend, that is easy to enjoy, knowing you are drinking a clean product. However, there are many other companies that offer much of the same flavor and quality, but at a lower price. Given its cost and website description, I expected something much more dynamic. Iā€™ll be sampling two more blends from Breakaway soon!
