Moo Moo Matcha Review

About: At the time of the review, this was a very young company, launched in December 2020. It is based in NYC and aims to offer organic matcha at a low cost.

Price: $24.95 per 30 grams

Smell: Sweet dehydrated raspberries and buttery notes.

Color: A bright, vivid shamrock green. Points 4

Foam + Texture: A fluffy mid hight crema made with uniform bubbles. The texture is smooth, with a slight chalkiness and an average finish. Points 4

Taste: Considered a more muted and gentle flavor profile, with vegetal notes of spinach and grass, slight bitterness, low sweetness, and a low brothy umami flavor. Very easy to drink as a thin water tea. Points 3.25

Final Score: 3.75

Thoughts: Overall, I am very pleased with this blend. When reviewing matcha powder, I rate and note flavors using a traditional water preparation. These outcomes are noted here in the flavor profile chart. BUT something really interesting happened after a few days of opening the tin and then using a latte preparation method. Unlike when made as a watery tea (usucha), as a latte the Moo Moo Matcha Ceremonial blend grew in umami flavor. Although still a relatively smooth and mild matcha, the umami became the predominate taste note. It would be really interesting to compare flavors using different milk options.

This blend is perfect for matcha beginners. If you are reading this, you probably love matcha, but we have to acknowledge that many people do not enjoy the bitter, vegetal and umami tastes of matcha powder. Matcha green tea can take time to get accustomed to (I know, hard to believe as an obsessive). Given the more gentle flavor profile, Moo Moo Matcha is an excellent place to start ones journey. Plus, it’s organic and comparatively a reasonably priced blend.
